About the Photographer

Barb Pashup is a Chicago-based photographer with a deep passion for rodeo. She is an RN who after working for 45 years and raising a family, decided to go to photography school. As a kid, she was fascinated with cowboys and cowgirls and loved to watch Westerns. They transported her to another world that provided an escape. In 2019, Barb went to her first Rodeo as a fan in the stands and was mesmerized by the experience. Two years later, she managed to get behind the scenes with the contestants. It was a magical experience and she knew it was only the beginning. Barb is a current member of the IPRA, International Professional Rodeo Association and carries a Photographer's card.

Rodeo is not just a sport, it’s a way of life. She witnessed the “Cowboy Code,” which is a set of unwritten principles centered on honesty, integrity, courage, loyalty, and a strong work ethic. She observed how the cowboys helped each other, getting ready to ride, and congratulating and cheering each other on. She knew she found her place.

When Barb is at the rodeo, she lives in the moment. Her focus is fixated on the experience and she becomes one with her camera. Her attention centers on the action and spirit of the cowboys and cowgirls, as well as the rodeo’s deep historical roots. Through her lens, she captures their energy, skill, and timeless wisdom.

“You don't take a photograph, you make it. It's a creative act, not a passive act."
